Ways to reduce stress

Pause …and breathe in green,  Cherry trees and magnolias, evidence of spring!

Do you look forward to warmer greener days like I do?

The aromas of new life are emerging and moods begin to lift giving inspiration to look good, feel fresh and lively. Just immersing oneself in nature strolling quietly in the spring sunshine amongst natures’ ready pharmacy often awakens past memories of carefree joy. When in a relaxed mood the body finds an inner calmness, a great antidote to stress.  Even the smell of freshly cut grass can awaken sweet past childhood memories of fun and laughter.  Ever noticed how children love space especially in Mother nature?  They run around wildly, with no worries loving everything that surrounds them, noticing the little things like a fallen branch, or stopping to pick up a bright yellow dandelion head, or pausing to hear a bird in full song on a nearby branch of a tree.  They no longer have a need for material stimulus or future expectations.  You can see how free and content they are when you look into their excited eyes. Children are good at letting go and loving each moment as though it’s their very first experience.

So take yourself to a beautiful place in nature. Pretend to be a child again!!

Being alone and quiet is a great way to find feelings of freedom.  The hum drum of noise whether it is cars, people or television can be lost and forgotten –at least for a while..   Time out is essential for creating space in our minds. Hidden and new inspirational ideas creep into awareness more easily, sometimes answers to a difficult problem or perhaps an amazing new idea may spring to mind.

If we allow ourselves to breathe in the sweet spring scent and notice the sight of new seedlings popping out the ground it reminds us of the earth’s potential to provide boundless new growth. Beautiful plants flowers and trees flourish without effort.  The natural rhythms cycles and seasons of Nature can so easily be taken for granted.  The combination of the sun giving warmth, the light of day giving energy, the water from rainfall giving moisture for germination and hence potential for rebirth.  This combination is essential for the life of any living organism.  Including us!!

However we can survive with much less, but do we want to just survive? Or, do you want to live with high energy fantastic health, true love and happiness and thrive?

I believe we all want one thing…  to live with a smile on our face and be truly happy”!

Health and happiness go hand in hand, so let’s start with introducing more health onto our plates.  Remember the qualities of “greens” mother nature has every nutrient available to sustain abundant life you only have to look around!

Mixed Messages about Healthy Eating.

Messages about healthy eating start to get boring and confusing. One day this is the best food, another day the facts change  about that food so no wonder we become blase about all the information out there!

They say that diets don’t work! But why? Do you ever wonder what it really takes to change habits of a lifetime and become that natural slim self you once were or crave to be.

As I have experienced changing anything is not easy.  If it was, there would be no such thing as going on a diet.  Personally the word DIET suggests ( for a short period of time or temporary)problem being is understanding what’s going on for us when we succumb to foods that we are trying to stay away from. When we purchase that packet of chocolate biscuits or open the fridge door for more food, what makes us take that action?    Understanding our motives is the answer. If we are not aware of our motivations and our relationship with food then it is nearly impossible to achieve our health goals.

The majority of dieters cannot keep their weight off because their eating habits are linked to their emotions.  The word e motion means “feelings in motion.”
Sometimes life throws up problems and a great way to make us feel better is to halt that difficult e motion with an unhealthy food. You do feel better but not for long! Feel good hormones move into the blood stream where the fight or flight response is activated.  our underlying emotional cause is covered up but instead results in yo yo blood sugar disturbance and before you know it the vicious circle of cravings take us on a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows!

This kind of eating can be triggered by any form of doubt, anxiety, anger, guilt even things that we don’t register as stress in our lives.  We eat for many reasons, we eat when we are happy, we eat when we are sad, we eat when we are scared, we eat at celebrations, and when we want to cheer ourselves up, the list goes on.  However rarely do we eat through real hunger.

One way to help resolve these obsticles is by unleashing our hidden concerns to somone we trust. By releasing them from our mind and body creates a powerful way to let go needs to suppress inner conflicts through poor food choices.

Many of us hold ourselves back because we dont want to become a burden but silence does not help anyone solve problems. to ask for help shows great strength and proof of the will to persist in spite of pain or difficulty.

Start the year by being honest with ourselves. letting go of hurts means you will no longer have the need to use food as an emotional crutch.

We all respect people that are open and I believe the true road to health is by knowing ourselves.

Want to Get your life back!!

Want to Get your life back!!

If eating vegetables made you feel fantastic energized and shed those extra stubborn pounds easily would you be game enough to eat vegetables for one whole week?

Vegetarian Week is from the 24th -30th May! That week could be the beginning of a whole new you!

All vegetables contain high amounts of vitamins minerals and fibre, proteins (amino acids) and antioxidants.

The most precious component is chlorophyll which I call the blood of the plant. It takes up pure sunshine and traps it to give life and energy for growth and it’s only when you eat it and it is broken down that this energy is released.

Nature has provided us with a pharmacy of highly nourishing food, “whole foods, Vegetables are whole. They have not been interfered with, changed added to or taken away from so they are living and keep us alive.  Dead foods don’t! Instead they rob the very life from your body.

Sunshine make you feel happy energized and gives you that feeling of being glad to be alive. But when the sun ‘don’t’ shine you feel deflated and unmotivated and for many of you especially in winter SAD is a common problem.  .

The foods that provide the most sunshine (I call it liquid gold) are the green leaves as they carry the minerals magnesium iron, amino acids and antioxidants. Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage broccoli, radishes, kale and chard are incredibly powerful healing foods known for their strong anti inflammatory properties.  Cabbage is rich in beta carotene, folic acid, vitamin c, gluthamine – an amino acid essential for great digestion.

Broccoli is a food full of calcium, selenium, potassium, and organic sodium plus the chlorophyll rich magnesium and iron.  Try this recipe for a nutrient rich raw salad.

Broccoli and cabbage salad

1 head large broccoli- make sure it is organic and as fresh as possible. And use the stalk too!

1 small spring cabbage
Sunflower seeds(that have been soaked)
Dressing
3 x Clove garlic
Chunk of ginger
Good pinch Turmeric
Good pinch Cumin
Avocado
Red Chilli
½ jar Cold pressed olive oil/flaxseed
3x tbspns or appropriate for your taste Organic apple cider vinegar
Juice 2 x lemons
Ps this dressing can be left in the fridge for a week or so.
Finely chop broccoli and cabbage

Whizz up all dressing ingredients in a blender or chop by hand and shake in a jam jar – lid on of course!

Just think of the strongest animals in the world, elephants, gorillas giraffes buffalo, and horses they eat vegetation a source of proteins and minerals abundant in plant form. They don’t get their nutrients by eating flesh from other animals!

Take a closer look at what the big food industries media and pharmaceutical companies are doing, it s up to you to really see through all the hype and find the truth. The only way to know is by experiencing and experimenting yourself…

Try it may 24th -30th May 2010

They give massive energy boosting nutrients to super charge your day

Method

Use a blender to whizz up your favourite fruits and dare I mention it you can even make orange, green, pink, purple dependent on the ingredients.

Bananas are great as a basic as they have a natural sweet taste especially when first starting out or for children!

Add orange, pineapple, grapes, pomegranate, grapefruit, berries, even add unusual fruits mango, papaya, kiwi just anything you fancy apart from melon as this is best eaten on its own.

When you are feeling good about fruits then try adding greens lettuce chard spinach etc as this really increases the minerals and vitamins due to the chlorophyll abundant in green foods.  Grated beetroot and carrot is excellent as these are quite sweet as starter vegetables to incorporate.

Water melon is delicious whizzed up on its own including the seeds with ice it goes into a pretty pink frothy refreshing drink and is packed with vital antioxidants to help wipe out those free radicals especially if you have indulged over the weekend.

The Truth About Salt

the truth about saltEvery newspaper you pick at the moment seems to be focusing on our high intake of salt

But I thought it was time to share the truth about salt.

When natural sea salt/rock salt which by the way contains all 84 natural trace elements and minerals found in our own body, is blasted with high temperatures and chemically treated what is left is the sodium chloride in a form that is foreign, and therefore toxic to the body.

However in our body it will react by trying to excrete it.  Massive amounts of energy is used to do this. What it can’t eliminate it has to store and this is where the body will start to throw out symptoms.  Every gram of salt must be suspended in 23grams of water in order to neutralize it, a mammoth task if ever for our poor body.

This challenge will predispose us to all sorts of health complaints ie:

  • Dehydration, water retention.
  • High Blood Pressure
  • adrenal stress
  • circulatory problems heart rhythm disturbances
  • muscular weakness
  • bone /joint pain
  • poor digestion

As we heard on the news and papers yesterday we are consuming far too much salt, but lets get one thing straight here.

It’s not just about the amount of salt – but the form our salt intake is in!!

Sodium Chloride is in almost all packaged, canned, bottled, plastic coated (yes even including so called healthy options breakfast cereals/bars, beans) ….and beware also takeaways and restaurant foods.  It has been a modern epidemic of over consuming convenience foods which has led to most of our sodium related health problems.  Manufacturers have poured extra salt into our food to appeal to our ever increasing cravings for salt brought about by consuming too much in the first place!

A regular diet of fresh foods, locally grown and preferably organic is what is needed to maintain a healthy balance of sodium, which is the right type of salt in it’s pure form that we find in nature, one that our body recognises and so can utilise.

All the organic salt our body requires is in our natural foods. Our body cannot absorb any other very well without paying a price to our health.

  1. Eat as close to nature as possible-fruit veg wholegrains.
  2. Use herbs and spices instead to pep up blander foods and get creative in the kitchen.
  3. I use Himalayan rock salt ,if I want to put in for taste. Drying celery and whizzing up into powder is another option.

Hope this has been useful but if you have any questions about salt in your diet, you can email on Karina@EatYourWayBackToHealth.co.uk

Happy healthy eating!
